The Bumps on Sophie's Brain
The Bumps on Sophie’s Brain
This comic is about a young woman suffering from anxiety and chronic panic attacks.  Although she excels at her job as a miner on the moon, she is socially inapt and it is preventing her from being promoted and living a full and happy life.
Sophie has been seeing her psychiatrist, Dr Carey for years.  However, he’s always been just a little off putting to her and she can’t quite put a finger on what it is that makes him strange.  Dr Carey, and everyone else works for the government.  He’s been put in charge of finding candidates for a new brain intuitive that would increase productivity and profit.  After all, Government is just a synonym for corporation.
Sophie is the first candidate that will receive a new mechanical brain.  The Doctor is delighted and doesn’t understand Sophie’s reluctance or her aversion to the program.  Either way she has no choice.

The Ballad of Jenny Leigh and Chester

Jenny Leigh sits on the steps at the local college library.  The steps are marble and as old the New England University she attends.  She is eating a sandwich.  Her lunch pail at her feet, along with a bottle of water. She also a big book bag on her other side with a floral pattern. The sky is overcast, but not dreary.  She is dressed in a warm coat and is wearing warm fuzzy hat that covers her ear.  Her long dark hair flowing from beneath, onto her shoulders. A passerby or two is walking up/down the stairs and/or in front or behind her.

Chester sits on the steps, a few rows up and to the right of Jenny Leigh.  He has a brown paper lunch bag in his hands.  A very short haircut, a sports coat and loosened tie.  Cleary uncomfortable by the way he is dressed.  Perhaps he’s going to an interview. He’s too young to be wearing a liberal arts college prof

DeviantArt's Creepy Reputation?
While exploring through many other different sites, news, creative sources, as well interacting with many people in real world, I’ve noticed that DeviantArt has earned quite creepy reputation from… many professionals!
"A world of pregnant anthro furries having fetish stuff/foreplaying etc"
"My little pony, low quality porn pictures, cute manga faces"
"MySpace"
"It is the place for kawaii, cute, emo kids with low self esteep obsessed in japan culture."

In the contrast to Artstation, THU, professionals using Facebook community and the other sites, indeed DA has somewhat has received image of "furry/porn/manga/low esteem tension" art community in the eyes of many pros.
It is somewhat shocking, embarrassing and sad for me because I tend sharing my DA link, mention about DA's great potential with innovative people, especially when we speak about engaging community for certain project. At some point I'd like to engage DA community in a

Winston is an everyday 40-year-old man.  He takes a car pool every day to his job at a marketing firm downtown. He is a little pudgy in the middle and his hairline is receding.  He does his best, manages his money, pays his bills, and lives a simple life.

Every night however, Winston suffers from vivid nightmares.  The kind that don’t allow you to wake up when it gets intense.  He kicks the covers, he screams, sweats, and punches.  All of this to no avail.

In his dreams, he watches children being abducted, women being brutalized, murders, rapes, assaults.  He wants to truly believe that it’s all just bad dreams.  After posting his dreams on an online journal and looking to find kindred spirits or some relief, Winston discovers the truth about his dreams.

He is approached by Heidi and Curtis, who are members of a survivors group.  They inform Winston that his dreams are real and could perhaps hold the key to solving the disappearances of their siblings.

Meanwhile, the narrator has a serious dislike of Winston.

POV birds eye

1.

Winston is in the middle of a nightmare.  He has kicked the blanket off and it’s hanging off the far corner of the bed. The sheet is in a ball near his knees. Winston is sweating and his arms and legs are at strange angles. A dresser with his wallet, keys and watch stands next to a wall.  A closet door is slightly ajar.  The bedroom door is closed.  Yesterday’s clothes are scattered around the room. The window has dark and old fashioned drapes.  Next the bed is a night stand with a lamp and a clock.

Caption

Imagine for an instance that you could change someone’s world for the better, and all you need to do is fall asleep.

Caption 2

Winston can, but he doesn’t know it yet.  Or at least that’s what he tells himself. I mean really, what piece of shit.

Caption 3

Right now, he is letting something awful happen to someone innocent.  A young boy is being kidnapped and our Winston is just watching it happen. Told ya, he’s shit and I mean it.

Caption 4

He’s been watching these tragic events happen all his life.

Caption 5

Poor fucking Winston.

1.

Winston is in his kitchen pouring himself a cup of coffee. He is dressed for work in a pair of khaki pants, a short sleeved white button down shirt and a power tie.

Caption

Look at this asshole.  He doesn’t have a fucking clue.  Just go about your day Winston and pretend last night didn’t happen.

2.

Winston is looking out of his window above the kitchen sink.  He’s waiting for his carpool to work.

Winston thought

Where are they? This carpool is always making me late.  I should find a new one.  Rebecca is pretty though.

Caption

This guy.  What a mother fucker.  He holds all these lives in his hands. He could be helping people, but instead he’s worried about his spank bank.

3.

Winston is washing his coffee cup when he hears the honk from outside. The curtains to the window are open and he is looking out.

SFX

HONK HONK HONK

Winston thought

I guess Steve finally got that new car he’s been talking about.

4.

Winston opens the door to the Nissan SUV.  His condo complex is painted a boring white. Cars are in in the parking lot. The sun is just beginning to rise.

Winston

Good Morning everyone.

5.

Winston shuts the door. A woman’s hand is on his knee.

6.

Confused, Winston looks down at the hand.  Red fingernails.  A Costume Jewelry ring on her index finger.  Long fingers.

7.

Close on Winston. He’s the only one in the panel. He looks to his left toward the mystery woman. Mouth open, confused look. One eyebrow raised.

Winston

Huh?

Heid is sitting in the middle seat. She has a black leather brief case across her legs.  She is wearing a suit and skirt.  A man in cargo shorts and a polo shirt sits by the other door.  He has a goatee and hoop ear ring in his left ear.  Winston is confused.

Caption

Get ready fuck face.

Winston

I think, I, I’m in the wrong, ca, ca, car

Heidi

Driver, let’s go.

2.

Heidi looks stern at Winston.  The man in cargo shorts is aggressive and angry. We know Winston doesn’t have a clue what’s going on.

Heidi

Winston, we need to talk.

Curtis

You could have stopped them! Why didn’t you do anything? You could have saved my sister, asshole!

Winston

Oh god, what?

Heidi

Curtis.  Let me speak. You’re not helping.

3.

Close on Heidi and Winston

Heidi

What Curtis is referring to is your extraordinary ability to be at the scene of horrifying abductions across the United States for the past 45 years.

4.

Close on Winston’s troubled face.

Winston

What is this? Some sort of prank? Are you talking about my nightmares?

5.

Zoom out to all three in the back seat.

Curtis

I saw you, when I was a kid.  20 years ago, you were standing by while my sister was shoved into a car.  You just walked away.

Heidi

You did the same when my younger brother was taken. We are part of a survivors group for siblings of abducted children.  That’s how we learned about the mystery man standing near the abductions. We’ve been trying to find you for years.

Page 4

1.

Close Curtis shouting.

Curtis

You could have done something you prick, you could have talked to the police and described the guy, the car, anything.  The only person I could describe was you.  I was a kid, they didn’t fucking listen.  They thought I was confused and did a police sketch of you.

2.

Curtis reaches over Heidi.  He hands Winston the police sketch.

Curtis

This is you! Your stupid sideburns and your ugly bald head. Son of Bitch

Winston

I didn’t do, it was a dream, a nightmare.

3.

Move on Heidi and Winston Heidi is opening a briefcase.

Heidi

We have more evidence.  Dozens of police sketches, a few photographs, and stills from security cameras. We never knew your name. Until a google alert about a dream journal.

4.

Winston is looking down, confused and panicking.

Winston

Can we stop, I need some air, I can’t breathe, please pull over.

5.

Heidi taps the shoulder of the driver.

Heidi

Pull into that parking lot up ahead.

6.

Winston walks away from the car, his hands up behind his head. Heidi is shutting the SUV door.

Winston

This isn’t happening. They are nightmares, Oh god the pictures.  How can it be real? Oh god.

Heidi

I don’t know, but we want to help you Winston.  If we can stop these horrible things from happening, all those broken families and children, we could make a difference.

Page 5

1.

Curtis walks around the back of the SUV pointing at Winston.

Curtis

Not all of us want to help you.  Some of us just want to beat the shit out of you.

Caption

Nope, I’m not Curtis.  He’s a bigger idiot than Winston.

2.

Winston is on his knees.  His hands covering his face.

Winston

Impossible! I can’t believe you. I don’t know you. I don’t even know if I could do anything.

3.

Heidi kneels beside Winston, compassion in her eyes.  Curtis has his arms crossed and back turned.

Curtis

He is useless.  This isn’t worth our time.  Let’s just leave him here and move on.

Heidi

Shut up Curtis, you’re not helping.

Curtis

Whatever.

4.

Heidi is on one knee in front of Winston. Winston is still on both knees. She has his hands in hers.

Heidi

We can start slow Winston. We want to help you work this out.

5.

Winston looks up at Heidi in desperation.

Winston

Can I really help? I’ve always wanted to help, I didn’t know it was real. What could I possibly do?

Heidi

Then come with me, I’ll make sure you’re in a safe place. You can relax, and I’ll ask questions, and then we go from there.  This is our starting point.

6.

Winston smiles through his watery eyes.

Winston

Ok.

7

Heidi and Winston walk toward the SUV. She has her arm around his waist.

Winston

What’s your name?

Heidi

Heidi Vaughn, I’m a psychiatrist.

Caption

I’m still here punk.  Looks like this asshole finally wants to fight.  Maybe he’s not the pussy I think he is.  Nah, he is the biggest pussy on the planet. Poor Winston.

What I want to see in artists portfolios when I offer a paid job for a comic script

1. Sequential art that flows smoothly from frame to frame.

2.Unlettered Pages.   I want to see the room you leave for letting.

3. I want to see how you use panel and I need to see more than just a couple of four panel pages. I want to see five panels, then seven and more.

4. I want to see what you have drawn for other writers not just projects you've done alone.

5  I want to see how you tell the story.

6. Show me that you at least read my script before you offer your services. I'm probably gonna pass if I feel like I'm getting a cut and paste job that you send to everything and everyone that offers anything in the job forum.

7. Tell me your rate in an email. Be competitive. I want to do business with you. I know you are talented, and you are worth your fee. But remember, it's a free market saturated with talented artists.

8. Make sure what you send me fits the script I'm offering.  If I'm offering a one page script about a dog chasing a squirrel, than I'm probably going to pass on a portfolio filled with over sexualized anime children. Again it tells me you aren't really serious about working together.  If the script calls for dark and brooding, then that's what I'm looking for in your portfolio.

I think that covers most of the do's, now let's cover the do nots.

1. I don't care how well you can draw my little ponies. Don't send them to me, especially if they are fucking each other either, or anyone  else.

2. Don't send me sexualized children in any style. I'll just report it. It's disgusting.

3. I'm never gonna write anything that requires a female character to have breasts bigger than her head.

Thanks for reading my friends.  I hope I don't come across condescending or anything. Their are so many talented people and I want to work with so many of you.

I just needed to get this off my chest.

Sophie is sitting in a waiting room.  She has an appointment with her psychiatrist.  She has shoulder length sandy blonde hair and dressed in her working uniform.  Oversized red and white overalls.  She is scratching her and having a panic attack.  She is sweating slighting from her forehead and her armpits.  Her helmet and goggles are on the chair next to her.  She is alone.

Sophie Thought

This is it, this is it, He’s going to make me normal this time.

2.

Close on Sophie’s hand.  She is tapping the top of the helmet. It’s dirty, dented, and shows years of hard work and grime.

Sophie,

Come on, I’ve been here forever.

3.

A nurse walks out of the office door.

4. Sophie watches her with pleading eyes and nervous hands on her knees.  The nurse is exiting the room through the door leading out.

5.

Close on Sophie’s, face. She’s defeated.

Sophie whispers

A doctor, full graying beard, big belly, skinny legs and arms, a broken front tooth in his smile.  He is wearing a brown tweed suit with a pipe in his jacket pocket.  His hair is slightly thinning, but unkempt and long.  He has bright blue eyes and large abnormal hairy ears.

He is holding his office door open.

Sophie is frantic.  Her doctor always intimidates her.  She is awkwardly trying to stand and make eye contact.

Dr. Carey

Come on in Sophie. I have good news for you.

Page 3

1.

Dr Carey sits by his desk in a swivel chair facing Sophie.  Sophie is sitting on a chair the looks comfortable, but she clearly isn’t.

The office is small and perfectly square.  Awards and diplomas hang on the walls.  The desk is up against a window.  A large 90’s style computer monitor sits on the desk.  Papers and files are haphazardly scattered.

Dr Carey

Sophie, you look stressed. You shouldn’t be.

Sophie

It’s the nerves doctor, I can’t help it.

Dr Carey

I know coming here is always an extreme event. But those days are over.  My colleagues and I have decided to remove your brain and give you a new one.  Your mining days are over.

2.

Sophie is confused. Dr Carey is observing her reaction with little fanfare.

Sophie

My brain? I don’t understand what you’re talking about?

Dr Carey

That’s the beauty of it. You don’t have to understand.  Because this time tomorrow you are going to be a brand-new person.  Not a care in the world. The person you are right now, will be enhanced.

Sophie

I’m going to die! You’re going to kill me?

3.

The Doctor is touching his fingertips together, forming a triangle with his hands. Talking through his broken tooth.

Dr. Carey

No, No, Sophie we are not going to kill you. We are simply making a new you.   A Sophie 2.0.  You will have a new and upgraded brain.

Sophie Off panel

But, I, ,I don’t want this, I refuse…

4.

The Dr leans back in his chair.  His smile is showing his annoyance with her small mindedness.   Sophie is clenching her fist and on the edge of her seat.

Sophie

I won’t allow this, I won’t.  Please just let me be me.

Dr Carey

Your body is needed elsewhere and you brain is keeping you from a promotion.  It’s organic, and full glitches, a failure of biology. It’s for the best Sophie.

5.

Sophie is standing up looking as if she might bolt from the room.  The Dr. is pulling his pipe from his jacket pocket.

Sophie

This isn’t possible. I have rights, don’t I have rights? I don’t want this Dr. Carey.

Dr Carey

Sophie, please, the decision has been made and it’s for the greater good.  Now allow me to show you something that should settle your nerves.

The Dr holds a glass box holding Sophie’s new mechanical brain inside.  It has lumps instead of wrinkles.  The brain is lighting up in different places, and in different colors.  It’s white and glimmering.  Pipe smoke escapes the doctor’s mouth as he speaks. Sophie is standing at the door pulling the handle, but it’s locked. She is looking directly at the brain.

Dr Carey

Sophie this is the future of all workers.  We need you to be singular in purpose and give your best.  You will be a remarkable person. You should feel honored.  you are going to be a hero!

Sophie

Don’t I have a choice?

Dr Carey

Sophie, choices are beneath you.  We have good people that are making your choices. Please let them do their job.  You don’t have to worry about such trivial matters.

Sophie

But, I, I, I

Dr Carey

Shhhhh, Sophie, the time has come.  Put the selfish feelings away.

The End.
